Activities and Highlights

On 21 March 2026, the UNESCO Latvian National Commission invited people across Latvia to take part in the international campaign “Uzdāvini dzejoli” (“Gift a Poem”). The initiative encouraged participants to handwrite or create poems and give them as gifts to friends, classmates, teachers, family members, and other important people in their lives. A wide range of participants joined the campaign in Latvia, including schools, libraries, social care centres, other institutions, and individual participants.

Poems were gifted and displayed in libraries, school corridors, and classrooms, while literary events, poetry readings, and public speaking activities were organised throughout the country. In schools, students created their own poems, rewrote favourite works by well-known authors, illustrated and decorated them, and presented them to classmates and teachers. Schools also organised poetry readings and recitation events, encouraging students to express themselves creatively and confidently. The campaign gave participants the opportunity to experience the joy of reading, creating, and sharing poetry, while also promoting creativity, literacy, and cultural participation.
