Description of activities

Escola Secundária Quinta do Marquês

The ‘Gift a Poem’ activity by UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet) was a great success in our school, with students fully engaged and enthusiastic throughout the experience. They eagerly selected and shared poems, some students even wrote their own poems, demonstrating creativity, thoughtfulness, and a deep appreciation for literature. The activity not only encouraged a love for poetry but also fostered meaningful connections as students exchanged heartfelt words with one another. It was truly inspiring to see them immerse themselves in the power of language and expression, making the event both memorable and impactful.

Students wrote poems around the theme of Human Rights and sent them to me. Some of them were filmed saying them and we organized a little exhibition of those poems in a public space inside the school premises.

Celebration of World Poetry Day – Gift a Poem, UNESCO, collaboratively with Tree Day As part of the celebration of World Poetry Day (World Poetry Day – Gift a Poem, UNESCO) and Tree Day, students from the Education and Training Course – Child and Youth (CEF CCJ) carried out a special activity for 1st cycle students. Under the guidance of teachers Paula Sereno and Paula Victorino, the young people prepared and organized an initiative that promoted reading, creativity and environmental awareness. To mark the date, CEF CCJ students read several poems to the elementar school children, providing a moment of sharing and reflection on the importance of poetry. In addition, they developed a practical activity inspired by the poems read, encouraging artistic expression and interaction among participants. To culminate the activity, the students decorated a “poetry tree”, on which several poems in Portuguese and English were placed, created with recycled materials. This initiative not only reinforced the articulation between teaching cycles, but also promoted the interconnection between different curricular departments, highlighting the importance of poetry in the cultural and linguistic formation of students. The activity proved to be a success, with enthusiastic participation from both the young people from CEF CCJ and the children from the 1st cycle, demonstrating that poetry can be a powerful means of expression and sharing, encouraging values such as creativity, respect for nature and collaboration between different age groups.

The students and teachers of the educational community produced letters that were shared on the day of the initiative. The letters were shared randomly and after a moment in which some students recited poems that they had written as part of the Portuguese class project Pause for Silence. It is worth noting that poems were read in Ukrainian, English, Spanish and Portuguese, based on the diversity of nationalities of the IAI students. – In addition to the artistic component, based on the school’s philosophy, an artistic installation was created with books and poems, and badges were made with phrases or thoughts from artists alluding to the importance of gratitude, affection, respect, as well as poetry as a form of freedom and solidarity.

AGRUPAMENTO DE ESCOLAS DA BEMPOSTA Give a poem: International initiative to promote poetry and contribute to peace “The act of offering someone words of poetry is deeply human: a form of friendly co-presence, spiritual support, consolation, as well as a means of sustaining hope and building peace. Find someone and give them a poem. Not only to people in your closest circle (family, friends, neighbors and acquaintances), but also in places where a kind word is often needed – in nursing homes, retirement homes, orphanages, community centers, homeless shelters and hospitals.”

CFPIMM – Centro de Formação Profissional das Indústrias da Madeira e Mobiliário Firstly, we prepared a perfect environment in the Library by slecting several poetry books , writing and painting materials, including bookmarks. Than we invite the entire school community (students, teachers and staff) to spend some time among the books, select a poem, copy it onto a bookmark and then give it as a gift to someone. The activity was very pleasant and a success! It was great to see participants becoming book warm, reading poems, some even wanted to recite them! Everyone was happy and we were able to spread nice words. It was also interesting to see the surprise on the receiver’s faces when seeing their bookmarks. Take a look at our photos! That’s the magic of poetry: to transform and re-create!
