Description of activities

Escola Profissional de Agricultura e Desenvolvimento Rural de Cister, Alcobaça

Carrying out the activity “Gift a poem” in the space of EPADRC School Library: students browsed through different books with poetry by Portuguese authors and chose poems to offer to other people: to the seniors of Lar Solar de Cister, with whom they have exchanged correspondence throughout this academic year, but also to special people in their lives. They then transcribed these poems by hand onto a sheet created especially for this activity. On World Poetry Day, 4 students from the TAC3 class, representing their classmates, were offer poetry to the seniors of Solar de Cister at Vestiaria on the morning of 03/22/2024. Students took handwritten poems by Portuguese authors to offer to seniors and proceeded to read some of these poems. This visit also takes place as part of the “Correio Amigo” project in which students from the TAC3 class have been to participate throughout the school year, as part of an intergenerational volunteering project. It was a very special and emotional moment for everyone!

JARDIM ESCOLA JOÃO-DEUS DO FUNCHAL – MADEIRA

Within the scope of the “Gift a Poem” project, Jardim-Escola João de Deus do Funchal highlights the theme chosen for the Pedagogical Project, entitled “The magical world of words” and which has as its subtheme “Writers of our land” for the year academic year 2023/2024. As the development of reading and writing is a prerogative of our institution, the chosen theme, as well as the approach to it, makes perfect sense. An example of this was the activity carried out in the Carnival parade at Funchal’s central sign, where poets and writers such as João de Deus, Flor Bela Espanca, Luís de Camões, Mariana Alcoforado, Fernando Pessoa and Ana de Castro Osório were represented. Promoting excellent education is one of the main objectives of Jardim-Escola, as well as valuing the ideological principles of UNESCO, which is why we join campaigns and competitions that dignify the values and principles at national and international level.

JARDIM INFANTIL OGÁ-MITÁ

At that time, one of the school children (4 years old) made reference to the “date of April 25th”, annually celebrated by his Family, as a gesture of homage to the moment that brought “Freedom” to Portugal, with the fall of a dictatorial political regime. By sharing this experience, the other children raised questions, which promoted a “movement” of research on the aforementioned topic. The children brought several books about “The 25th of April”, also known as “The Carnation Revolution”, listened to songs (poems set to music) alluding to that date, read books on the subject and presented their perspective on this event, which took place 50 years ago. They chose a poem “Somos Livres”, written by Ermelinda Duarte (1974), a hymn of Hope and celebration of Freedom, very significant and emblematic in the post-revolution period. This poem was reproduced, by printing, since children in this age group do not yet write autonomously. Each child took the poem to offer to their Family, with the image of a carnation, drawn manually (as shown in the figure below), “April 25” icon. The message of this poem is particularly poignant in current times, with several wars raging happening around the world and with so many human rights violations. It is an invitation to join forces to build Peace! Quoting one of the 5-year-old children, this revolution, which turned out to be peaceful, is for all people and the entire planet is free. To be free is to have no war.

Escola Básica e Integrada Francisco Ferreira Drummond – Ilha Terceira, Açores

Students selected poems by various Portuguese, English and French authors and later copied them by hand and illustrated them or created a poster on Canva. Some poems were offered, individually, to friends/colleagues and others were displayed and recited in the School Library. On World Poetry Day, on March 21st, students from the 3rd cycle of EB presented all the EB1,2,3/JI classes in São Sebastião with one of these poems, inviting them to read it and analyze it. you in your classes. This activity resulted from a collaboration between the Department of Languages and the School Library, within the scope of the “Gift a Poem” campaign of the UNESCO Schools Network.
